The advent of social media has been a double-edged sword – on one hand it’s created a revolution in news, information, activism, education, and building global virtual networks. But on the other hand, it is arguably the pivotal mechanism in transforming the authentic self into a new, highly curated artificial simulacra of the self in the digital sphere, in what social scientists call profilicity. Can humanity survive this potential derailment in the evolutionary process?
