Paul Manafort Sues ‘Russiagate’ Special Counsel Mueller, DOJ and Deputy AG Rosenstein

Former Trump Campaign Chair Paul Manafort just filed a lawsuit against the United States Department of Justice, its Acting and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, and Special Counsel Robert Mueller, DOJ point man on ‘Russiagate’ – one of the Top 10 Conspiracies of 2017.

Among Manafort’s complaints (see full lawsuit here) are the apparent overreach of the Russia investigation, the appointment of Mueller by Rosenstein, and the strong-armed predawn raid of his home by the FBI last July.

21WIRE recently made its prediction about the future of Russiagate in 2018:

Russiagate Ringleader: California’s loopy Congressman Adam Schiff.

R.I.P. Russiagate – 2018 will see the total demise of the US establishment and Deep State’s wild-eyed conspiracy theory that Russia meddled, hacked, interfered, influenced or whatever, in the 2016 US Presidential Election. If there was any evidence of “Russian involvement” in helping Trump get elected… we most certainly would’ve seen it by now – but we haven’t, and we won’t. By year’s end, anyone who’s still clinging on to this fantasy canard should really consider getting the words “Resistance” or “desperate” tattooed on their foreheads. There’s not much more we can say on this other than it will go in history as the most idiotic political hoax in modern history. The question is, when Russiagate becomes a mainstream running joke – which it will – then where does that leave all the jokers who have been pumping it up for the last 18 months like CNN, MSNBC, The Washington Post, and nutty US lawmakers like Adam Schiff and John McCain?”

Zero Hedge reports…

The suit brought Wednesday in US District Court in Washington […] contends that the order Rosenstein signed to appoint Mueller “exceeds the scope of Mr. Rosenstein’s authority to appoint special counsel as well as specific restrictions on the scope of such appointments” and challenges Mueller’s decision to charge Manafort with alleged crimes that they say have nothing to do with the 2016 campaign, but rather relate to lucrative lobbying work Manafort and his deputy did for a former Russia-friendly government in Ukraine. That work ended in 2014, the suit says. Manafort and his deputy Rick Gates deny the allegations in the charges.

The focus is on a part of the Rosenstein order that says that Mueller may investigate “any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation.” The Manafort lawyers say that goes beyond what the law allows Rosenstein to empower Mueller to do.

Further, the Rosenstein order gives Mueller “carte blanche to investigate and pursue criminal charges in connection with anything he stumbles across while investigating, no matter how remote from the specific matter identified as the subject of the appointment order,” the lawsuit says.
