Occupied Palestine: Netanyahu Gives Up on Hostages, Sabotages Ceasefire with Deadly Airstrike on Gaza

In the aftermath of the initial phase of the ceasefire, Israel has once more impeded essential humanitarian assistance from reaching Gaza, further worsening the dire circumstances faced by Palestinians who are already suffering from genocide and widespread starvation. This blockade constitutes a direct violation of one of the six provisional measures issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in January 2024, which requires Israel to permit humanitarian aid to enter Gaza. Additionally, Article 55 of the Fourth Geneva Convention asserts that the occupying power is responsible for guaranteeing the provision of food and medical supplies to the population, while Article 59 emphasizes that this obligation is absolute. In one of his last statements on Gaza, humanitarian coordinator, Muhannad Hadi from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) declared:

The entry of humanitarian assistance into Gaza has been halted for nine consecutive days”, adding that the ceasefire needed to hold and the parties must fulfil their obligations under international law. Hostages must be released and Humanitarian assistance must be allowed in”.

Despite all this, on Tuesday, the 17th, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is wanted by the ICC, sanctioned an airstrike on Gaza, which led to the deaths of more than 3oo Palestinians, primarily civilians, among whom were many children. This operation represents the most intense military offensive since a ceasefire was established in January. Consequently, it has brought an end to the fragile ceasefire that had lasted for two months with Hamas. Netanyahu has cited the impasse in negotiations with Hamas as a rationale for his actions, a move which could ultimately determine the fate of the remaining hostages. The situation in Israel continues to deteriorate, with Netanyahu’s announcement on Sunday, March 16, that he would dismiss the head of the internal security services (Shin Bet), Ronen Bar.  In light of Shin Bet’s ongoing investigation into aides working with Netanyahu and, allegedly, on behalf of the Qatar government at the same time (QuatarGate), the war against Hamas and the looming armed conflict with Iran appears to have become Netanyahu’s lifeline.

White House Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt told reporters:
“The Trump administration and the White House were consulted by the Israelis on their attacks in Gaza tonight – and as President Trump has made it clear, Hamas, the Houthis, all those who seek to terrorize not just Israel but also the United States of America, will see a price to pay. All hell will break loose.”
