“Are you a Muslim? Which Mosque do you go to? Do you know al-Qaeda?”
These are questions New York City Police (NYPD) are asking young Muslims being picked-up for offenses like traffic violations, subway fair-dodging and graffiti art. The NYPD’s aim: to recruit more young Muslim informants to snitch on their peers.
Once arrested, or pulled in for questioning, NYPD officers claim that these interrogations are merely “non-coercive sessions”, but residents tell another story – of being heavily coerced and pressured into spying by police desperate to generate more intel and ‘reports on the Muslim community’ (read full report below).
Coercion is the key feature here, and so often is the case that both police and informants feel the pressure to produce ‘high value’ or ‘actionable’ intel and will routinely exaggerate findings, or even contrive a situation in order to carry out a ‘terror bust’.
This was most certainly the case in 2012, when the NYPD grandstanded after claims that they foiled a major terror plot by Quazi Mohammad Nafis, a 21 year old Bangali student, to blow up the NY Federal Reserve. Closer examination revealed a story of police entrapment – a farcically contrived situation from start to finish, and stage-managed by the NYPD.
New York seems to be a hot bed of innovation when it comes to terror plots. We cannot forget the ‘Christmas Tree Bomber’. As manufactured FBI terror plots go, this was one of the most ridiculous ever staged.
After the bust, then enter stage left, the NSA will normally join in, with the Agency announcing proudly that its wiretapping and spying ‘helped lead to the terror bust’. Each party manages to soak up some credit, and thus justify their own existence financial black holes to the US taxpayer.
As it turns out, 2010′s Christmas Tree Bomber, Mohamed Osman Mohamud, ended up mounting a Constitutional challenge in a federal court on the basis of NSA phone-tapping ‘evidence’ was used by Feds to entrap the mentally deranged, 19 year old Somalia-born student asset.
It’s not know just how much federal and DHS funding is offered to various metropolitan police departments in order for them to kick-start these type of initiatives and programs, but it’s certain that police departments will not turn away any federal money. In this way, federal money is not only driving the growth of the American police state, but it’s also fueling the Stasi culture of spying and informing in the United States. It also goes without saying that many aspiring Jack Bauers in management positions will see these programs as helpful for their resumés when vying for a promotion to better paid, less stressful positions as NYPD ‘counter-terrorism’ heads, or cushy positions with the DHS.
PHOTO OP: John McCain hangs out regularly with terrorists, lobbying on behalf of them.
What’s more, perhaps police should ask Senator John McCain if he’s like to work as an informant too, since he’s on such cozy terms with al Qaeda terrorists in Syria, Neo-Nazi Fascist thugs in Kiev and Muslim Brotherhood operatives in Egypt – enough to lobby hard for hundreds of millions in US taxpayer dollars to send them arms and heavy weaponry in the case of Syria.
Besides the fact that Washington DC does more to promote real terrorism globally than anyone else outside of Saudi Arabia, if US authorities are not happy with the dwindling level of real terror threats inside the US, then they have, and will continue to invent plots and threats at home.
As long as US authorities keep pumping up the myth, and the funding and profits continue to roll in, expect ever more ‘terror busts’ and ‘foiled plots’ crashing onto your mainstream media headlines…
New York police have been recruiting for informants in holding facilities for immigrants, most of them Muslims, aiming to “talk them” into spying on their own community in cafes, restaurants and mosques, documents obtained by The New York Times show.
Less than a month has passed since the highly publicized announcement that the NYPD has disbanded its highly controversial Zone Assessment Unit, or as it is known to the city’s Muslim community, the Demographics Unit.
However, the recruitment of immigrants to eavesdrop on conversations in Muslim neighborhoods shows no signs of easing, according to a New York Times article, which says 220 such recruitment attempts were made in the first quarter of this year alone by a unit known as the Citywide Debriefing Team.
“Are you a Muslim?”
“Which Mosque do you go to?”
“How do you celebrate Muslim holidays?”
“Have you been to Mecca?”
“Are any of your friends radicals?”
“Where do the Somalia immigrants tend to gather?”
“Al Qaeda, do you know these people?”
These are just some of the interview questions posed to members of the Muslim community waiting to be arraigned in a lockup facility after minor infractions. The Times article points to a few such episodes. An immigrant from Afghanistan was asked to act as a stool pigeon in Muslim cafes, restaurants and mosques following his arrest over an argument with a traffic police officer. A similar proposal was made to a student from Pakistan who was placed in a cell for driving without a valid license.
Religion-based profiling has become a normal occurrence at the NYPD, which continues to generate data on Muslims’ praying, eating and shopping habits. The source seems to be irrelevant as, the Citywide Debriefing Team aims to recruit Muslims, regardless of what they know or how distant they are from actual terrorist activity.
Such fishing expeditions are usually conducted during interrogations or “non-coercive sessions” as one police officer put it. However, regardless of how the recruitment process is branded, the subjects have come out shaken and disturbed from such encounters, feeling they had little choice but to cooperate.
NYPD informant recruiters filed daily detailed reports about Muslims in detention. Some of their subjects were pushed so far into a corner they were ready to say anything to be freed. Here’s an excerpt from a report on the recruitment of Bayjan Abrahimi, a food cart vendor from Afghanistan, quoted by The New York Times.
Detective writes: “He spent his ‘free time in a library reading and learning English. Mr. Abrahimi agreed to provide detectives with the overseas phone number of his brother, the taxi driver. Subject believes other family members would help if asked. Mr. Abrahimi is willing, if the Police Department requests, “to attend services at other locations and travel.”
The officer’s report concludes that Mr. Abrahimi is “suitable for assignments locally and outside the city” and described him as showing “high potential to be used as an asset.”
Just last month, the NYPD disbanded another clandestine unit of plainclothes detectives, called the Demographics Unit, which ran detailed, invasive spying operations targeting the city’s Muslim communities. The fruits of that labor led to multiple legal challenges and outrage among citizens, especially the targeted communities already under scrutiny following the September 11, 2001 attacks.
