Our weekly documentary film, curated by the editorial team at 21WIRE.
In 1934, a team called Palestine entered the World Cup qualifying rounds in Mussolini’s fascist Italy, but included no Palestinian players. It was drawn largely from the Jewish sporting movement under the British Mandate.
Through archives, interviews with specialist historians and the 1934 qualifiers against Egypt, this documentary examines how British rule, Zionist organisation and Palestinian exclusion shaped the team. It traces how the football association became Israel’s, while Palestinian football was plagued by revolt, war and the 1948 Nakba. Decades later, Palestinians fought to reclaim their place in world football, securing FIFA recognition in 1998. Watch:
