SUNDAY SCREENING: Secret History of Mau Mau (1999)

Our weekly documentary film curated by the editorial team at 21WIRE.

This documentary exposes key aspects of one of the most disturbing chapters in British imperial history: the suppression of Kenya’s Mau Mau rebellion against their British colonial masters. The film shows how in the wake of World War II, a flailing British Empire had tried to suppress this anti-colonial uprising through campaigns of military terror and by attempting confining some 1.5 million Kenyans to a network of brutal concentration camps and deploying the British military to patrol the country’s villages. It was a tale of systematic violence and high-level cover-ups, and remains shocking even today. Watch:
