Over the past two years, the #MeToo movement appears to have taken the entertainment and media industry by storm, forcing numerous resignations of male news anchors and executives accused of sexual misconduct and abuse. But few are aware of the early roots of the movement and how its recent iteration was re-appropriated by an elite super class – for the consumption of their upper middle class, and middle class fan bases.
In his analysis, Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Zizek also explains how the #MeToo is now driven by a politically correct obsession, fueled by narcissistic individualism where practitioners broadcast the mantra, “I want me peace, let the ‘other’ (male patriarchy, or masculine men) remain at a distance.”
By allying logic and reasoning, Zizek demonstrates how #MeToo has been co-opted, where the concept of victimization is used to consolidate social, professional or political power.
