(VIDEO) Palmyra in 360: The Scars Left Behind by ISIS

21st Century Wire says…

Regarded as the “Pearl of the Desert,” the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria was a major stop for travellers on the old Silk Road to Asia. Palmyra’s Temples and ancient sites have stood for thousands of years.

The desert city was declared a World Heritage site by Unesco, and became a prime target for ISIS in its bid to strip the Middle East of its visible heritage.

“At the time, Unesco’s director general, Irina Bokova, said the destruction of the Arch of Triumph “shows how extremists are terrified by history and culture,” reported the NYT in January.

“On 27 March the Syrian Army backed by the Russian Air Force liberated Palmyra from ISIS terrorists. Numerous experts flocked to Palmyra to assess the damage caused by jihadists and revive the city.” (RT Documentary)
