Amerikan Education: Is it a school, or is it a prison?

2013 was not a good year for the US education system, as its mediocre performance continues in relation to the rest of the world, as is evidenced by the US continual slide downwards in the international ranking of OECD countries.

Despite spending more money than almost any other country, the results are unimpressive. For example, the Slovak Republic, which scores similarly to the U.S., spends $53,000 per student, while the U.S. spends $115,000.

Experts now concede that the intelligence gap between Chinese and American students in math and sciences is growing, with little chance that the US will ever regain the top position it once enjoyed in the mid 20th century. It’s a fair question to ask: should America’s priority be increased performance, or increased  ‘security’?

In the wake of the drama known as ‘Sandy Hook’, school districts around the US are running “active shooter drills”, further conditioning American children to accept police incursions into every aspect of their life.

One of the main contributors to this inescapable trend is that America’s obsession with control and surveillance in society has made permanent inroads into student life, with a large proportion of US schools now resembling prison complexes…

Schools are looking more and more like prisons every day.
