Beginning with the CIA-backed overthrow of Iranian prime minister Mohammad Mosaddegh in 1953, Iran: The Making of a War traces more than seven decades of political upheaval, mistrust and confrontation.
The documentary follows Iran’s transformation from a Western-aligned monarchy under Mohammad Reza Pahlavi to an Islamic Republic led by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. It examines how the 1979 hostage crisis shattered relations with Washington and how Iran’s growing rivalry with Israel fuelled a conflict shaped by sanctions, proxy wars, covert operations, assassinations and disputes over Iran’s nuclear programme.
Through archival footage, expert analysis and accounts from different perspectives, the film reconstructs the decisions and miscalculations that brought the three countries closer to direct war. It asks how former allies reached this point, why opportunities to step back were lost, and what their confrontation could mean for the Middle East and the wider world.
