On Monday, Amnesty International released its 2024/25 report. The document highlights the escalating violence of Israel’s military occupation, bolstered by unwavering support from the USA, Germany, and a few European nations, alongside the Biden administration’s repeated vetoes of UN Security Council ceasefire resolutions and ongoing arms transfers to Israel. In the aftermath of the attack by Hamas on Israeli settlements on October 7, 2023, where more than 250 individuals were taken captive, the world witnessed a live-streamed tragedy. Nations seemed passive as Israel caused mass casualties among Palestinians, destroying families, homes, hospitals, and schools.
The report recommends that “all parties to armed conflicts must respect international humanitarian law, in particular ending direct attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, and indiscriminate attacks. Foreign governments must stop transfers of weapons where there is an overriding risk of their use to commit or facilitate serious violations of human rights or international humanitarian law”.

In 2024, Israel’s actions in Gaza led to devastating civilian consequences, amounting to genocide. Despite global protests, governments failed to take effective action to stop the atrocities and were slow to call for a ceasefire. Meanwhile, the apartheid system in Israel worsened in the occupied West Bank, with increased unlawful killings and assaults by Israeli settlers on Palestinians. Although international justice efforts aimed to hold Israel, the Occupied Palestinian Territory, and Libya accountable, Israel’s allies often criticised or ignored these initiatives, shielding offenders from justice and exposing the double standards in the international order.

Amnesty International report documents human rights abuses committed by Israel
Israel is perpetrating a “live-streamed genocide” in Gaza, committing illegal acts with the “specific intent” of wiping out Palestinians, Amnesty International said in its annual report released on Monday.
“…events of the past 12 months – not least Israel’s livestreamed but unheeded genocide of Palestinians in Gaza – have laid bare just how hellish the world can be for so many when the most powerful states jettison international law and disregard multilateral institutions”, said Agnes Callamard, Amnesty International’s secretary general.
The report documents how Israeli forces in Gaza have violated the United Nations Genocide Convention by “causing serious bodily or mental harm to civilians” and “deliberately inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about their physical destruction”.
The report also noted that Israel has repeatedly “denied, obstructed and failed to allow and facilitate” humanitarian access to Gaza, and invaded the southern city of Rafah, despite warnings by the international community and the International Court of Justice about the “devastating effect it would have on the civilian population”.
It also outlined how Israeli air strikes have frequently struck civilians who were following evacuation orders, while its forces continued to “arbitrarily detain and, in some cases, forcibly disappear Palestinians”.
“States watched on as if powerless, as Israel killed thousands upon thousands of Palestinians, wiping out entire multigenerational families, destroying homes, livelihoods, hospitals and schools.”
Israel and “its powerful allies, first among them the USA, claimed that or acted as if international law did not apply to them”, Callamard observed.
