Israel Investigates Itself, While US Disowns Its Citizen Killed by IDF in West Bank

Israeli authorities have concluded their investigation into themselves and issued a report on the killing of Aysenur Eygi (image, above), an American citizen who was shot dead while protesting against the settlement of Evyatar in the northern Israeli-occupied West Bank. In their investigation, Israel claims that it was “highly probable” that Eygi died as a result of an “indirect and unintended hit by IDF fire aimed at a central instigator”.

In the aftermath of Eygi’s death, Israeli journalist and CNN analyst Barak Ravid shared what many believe is a biased IDF report on the inquiry into her death, while Assal Rad and others denounce this instance as yet another cover-up and emphasise that Israel’s investigations often lead to impunity.

Seasoned Israeli activist and eyewitness Jonathan Pollack, who was in Beita when Eygi was shot dead, mentions that the Israeli army immediately opened fire on villagers after they had finished praying. “As soon as the prayer ended, clashes began between soldiers and youth from the village & soldiers started shooting live ammunition. The soldier had a clear line of sight to Eygi.”

Pollack also goes on to call-out the mainstream media for their double standards, noting that since 2021, 17 Palestinians have been killed in Beita, with Eygi’s death drawing international attention only because of her dual nationality.

The murder of Eygi comes 21 years after American activist Rachel Corrie was crushed to death by an Israeli armoured bulldozer while protesting illegal Israeli settlements with the International Solidarity Movement. Her parents Cindy and Craig Corrie, who have spent years seeking justice for their daughter’s tragic death are now calling for an independent investigation into Eygi’s killing. They warn of a potential Israeli military cover-up and urge the UN and the International Criminal Court to get involved. Watch:

Both Rachel and Aysenur were in their 20s when they were killed by Israeli soldiers. They were both volunteers for the International Solidarity Movement and died defending Palestinian rights.
