A new vote in the Canadian Parliament this week will ban any future arms exports to Israel.
Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly announced the move on Tuesday after Canada’s parliament passed a non-binding motion stopping weapons to the State of Israel as it carries out a genocide against the native Palestinian population.
“It is a real thing,” Joly told The Toronto Star in a statement, insisting that the controversial move is not merely symbolic, and that the government will cease the transfer of arms to Israel.
The document compels Ottawa to “cease the further authorization and transfer of arms exports to Israel,” said state broadcaster CBC, with the original text demanded the suspension “of all trade in military goods and technology with Israel.”
The statement came after the parliament passed a resolution condemning Israel’s brutal military operation against the people of Gaza, entering its sixth month.
The motion is said to be part of a larger vote originally put forward by the minority left-leaning New Democrats (NDP), calling on the international community to ‘work toward a two-state solution’ which some western politicians still believe will somehow resolve the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians – even though in reality Israel has already explicitly rejected endorsing any Palestinian state, and has opted instead to pursuing a systematic policy of ethnic cleansing and genocide in order to solve what Zionists regard as a ‘final solution to the Palestinian problem.’
The parliamentary motion was , who pitched it as a way to revive peace talks and support the Palestinians. The resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza was passed on Monday after MPs agreed to tone down its language and include a demand that Hamas “must lay down its arms.”
