U.S. federal judge has once again denied bail to long-time Jeffrey Epstein associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, saying that she poses a major flight risk.
This was Ms. Maxwell’s second unsuccessful pre-trial bail application, after the British socialite and international sex trafficking suspect pleaded not guilty to several charges this past July, including conspiracy entice a minor, as well as perjury.
According to a report by the New York Times, Maxwell, 58, has called life in her Brooklyn jail cell “oppressive,” while federal prosecutors say she’s actually getting the ‘country club’ treatment often afforded to high-profile white collar Wall Street and organized crime figures. A spokesperson from the prosecutor’s office said that Ms. Maxwell is released from her cell for 13 hours a day will amble time and space to move and remain active, as well as having her own private shower, her own TV, exclusive use of two computers, and even her own phone.
Maxwell has complained that guards were poking a flashlight in her cell every hour to ensure she ‘hasn’t committed suicide.’
“Those conditions set her far apart from general population inmates, not to mention other inmates in protective custody,” said a new court filing rejecting Ms. Maxwell’s most recent request for bail — set at an unusually high $28.5 million bond.
Previously, back in July her defense team had proposed a $5 million bail bond which was summarily rejected, and then returned with a much higher offer of $22.5 million to be provided by Ms. Maxwell and her husband (whom the court will not identify). According to her lawyers, this latest proposed bail package totaling $28.5 million is said to represent all the money and property including “her and her spouse’s assets, her family’s livelihood, and the financial security of her closest friends and family.”
This latest news comes on the heels of the arrest in France of another high-profile Epstein associate and alleged co-conspirator, former modelling agency impresario Jean-Luc Brunel, who was arrested at an airport near Paris by French law enforcement as part of a larger investigation into international sex crimes and trafficking committed by Jeffrey Epstein and his criminal cohort.
