A Clear and Present Danger: Yellowstone’s Caldera Super-Volcano

As far as Mother Nature-induced Armageddon scenarios go, the simmering super-volcano underneath the Wyoming Yellowstone Park is surely one clear and present danger not to be ignored.


North America’s largest caldera has been on the rise, at a record rate since 2004. According to recent scientific reports the subterranean volcano’s floor has gone up three inches per year – for the last three years alone, the fastest rate since records began in 1923. The Mail report continues:

“Scientists monitoring it believe that a swelling magma reservoir six miles underground may be causing the recent uplifts.

They have also been keeping an eye on a ‘pancake-shaped blob’ of molten rock he size of Los Angeles which was pressed into the volcano some time ago.

But due the extreme conditions it has been hard to work out what exactly is going on down below, leading researchers unable to say with certainty what will happen – or when.

Since the most recent blast 640,000 years ago there have been around 30 smaller eruptions, the most recent of which was 70,000 years ago.”

Unlike a surface volcano eruption, a caldera of that scale could throw the globe into a long winter, and even bring on a mini Ice Age, blocking out the sun and displace 10 inches of ash on the ground around a 2500 thousand mile perimeter. Plant life in the northern hemisphere would likely become extinct for a period of time triggering global starvation, making humans an endangered species as a result.

Although the Cold War has come and gone, the bunker business has not. 21WIRE has reported earlier in 2013, about the proliferation of large-scale underground bunkers popping up across the US. Is this one of the reasons for this new industry.

This is no conspiracy theory. According to Earth Mountain View:
Yellowstone’s massive mantle plume is getting bigger. This reservoir of super heated viscose rock is at least two and a half times larger than previously thought. A new study disclosed on Oct. 27th at the Geological Society of America annual conference, stated a huge earthquake measuring 9.0 mag. or larger as a result of Yellowstone’s massive mantle plume expansion may be a higher risk in the near future, than a eventual volcanic eruption.

Unfortunately, Global Warming and Climate Change cult fanatics cannot blame this on CO2 emissions – any major event will be the result of natural sub-surface, or celestial causes. 

Top of the list of  earthly triggers would be an earthquake:
A strong enough earthquake, like the one that occurred out at Hebgen Lake in 1959 measuring 7.3 to 7.5 on the Richter magnitude scale, caused nearly 300 features on the Yellowstone landscape to erupt, 160 of which had no previous record of geysers.
Celestial causes could include an alteration in the Moon’s gravity pull or a direct asteroid strike near the caldera, but also, and perhaps a more likely a trigger, could be the Sun. Swiss geologists have recently completed experimental simulations (see article below) using X-rays to heat up magma material which points to the possibility that that extreme solar flare activity – across the invisible radiation spectrum. The probability of such solar effects is still as yet unknown. Something to consider though.

Apocalyptic supervolcanoes can suddenly explode ‘with no outside cause’

Scientists have discovered what causes cataclysm-inducing supervolcanoes to erupt, and the answer offers little reassurance. Their eruptions are caused by magma buoyancy, which makes them less predictable and more frequent than previously thought.

A team of geologists from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) modeled a supervolcano – such as Yellowstone in Wyoming – using synthetic magma heated up with a high-energy X-ray to see what could create a powerful discharge. A separate international team, led by Luca Caricchi of the University of Geneva, conducted more than 1.2 million computer simulations of eruptions.

Both groups have arrived at similar conclusions, with two studies simultaneously published in Nature Geoscience magazine.

“We knew the clock was ticking but we didn’t know how fast: what would it take to trigger a super-eruption?” said Wim Malfait, the lead author of the ETH study.

“Now we know you don’t need any extra factor – a supervolcano can erupt due to its enormous size alone.”

It was previously thought that supervolcanoes – which spew out hundreds more times of lava and ash than ordinary ruptures – could be triggered by earthquakes or other outside tectonic phenomena.

It was also clear that these volcanoes do not operate like ordinary eruptions, which rely on magma filling their chambers, and spurting through an opening, once the pressure gets to a certain point, since the chambers of supervolcanoes are too large to be over pressurized to the same degree.

Now, the studies have identified the unique supervolcano mechanism that makes their discharge more like powerful explosions than normal eruptions.

The molten magma in the mostly underground supervolcano is lighter than the surrounding rocks, and the difference in pressure, creates a ‘buoyancy effect’, meaning the super-hot terrestrial soup is always attempting to burst out.

“The difference in density between the molten magma in the caldera and the surrounding rock is big enough to drive the magma from the chamber to the surface,” said Jean-Philippe Perrillat of the National Centre for Scientific Research in Grenoble, where the experiments were conducted.

“The effect is like the extra buoyancy of a football when it is filled with air underwater, which forces it to the surface because of the denser water around it. If the volume of magma is big enough, it should come to the surface and explode like a champagne bottle being uncorked.”

The researchers believe that the pressure force of the molten magma pools can be strong enough to crack 10 km thick layers of rock, before spewing out a maximum of between 3,500 and 7,000 cubic kilometers of lava. In comparison, the notorious Krakatoa explosion in 1883 likely ejected less than 30 cubic kilometers of debris into the atmosphere.

The effects on Earth are likely to be fundamental, with previous studies suggesting that such a supervolcano could decrease the temperature on Earth by 10 C for a decade, as the ash would prevent sunlight from reaching the ground.

The last supervolcano eruption in Lake Toba took place more than 70,000 years ago. According to one highly-contested theory it may have wiped out more than half of the planet’s population; in any case the effect on the world would be dramatic.

“This is something that, as a species, we will eventually have to deal with. It will happen in future,” said Dr Malfait.

“You could compare it to an asteroid impact – the risk at any given time is small, but when it happens the consequences will be catastrophic.”

A volcano has to eject more than 1,000 cubic km of debris in a single eruption to be counted as a supervolcano, and there are less than ten potential sites with sufficiently large magma chambers around the world, though there may be others lurking underneath the ocean surface. These formations, which are more often flat with no outlet, are expected to erupt once every 50,000 years, though there is no regularity to the frequency of eruptions.

The computer modelers believe that the buoyancy mechanism means that such eruptions occur more frequently than previously thought, though the exact extent is hard to estimate without studying magma flows at each potential location.

Nonetheless, the ETH scientists say that there could be detectable pressure changes, and perhaps even spectacular rises of ground level sometime before the eventual explosion. But it is not clear how long after such changes an eruption would take place, or whether advance knowledge would actually help to mitigate its impact.

    A man from Seattle, who has since moved elsewhere, used to keep me updated with his regular information blogs about the sun’s effect on weather and about the Yellowstone super volcano. This man’s name is Mitch Battros. He revealed about four years ago that there had already been a ‘swarm’ of earthquakes around Yellowstone lake; none of them reported by the Geological Survey. The earthquakes averaged just over 5 on the Richter scale. Indeed, this huge monster is about to come out of its lair.

    Therefore, since I am one who also tries to offer solutions when I comment here and there, this is something that I have thought of for some years now; since this massive caldera will directly affect me. Now, realize, I am not a geophysicist, a geologist, or any of that; I am an author and visual artist; and I have a good imagination. Is it not possible to sink large diameter, or a series of smaller diameter pipes into the magma to tap off the abundance? We have advanced drilling technologies, why not put them to use and save the planet from what will be an instant ELE for most life in the 2500 mile diameter from the centre; that being Lake Yellowstone, and a horror for the rest. Tapping into the magma can relieve the pressure and slow down the unfolding disaster; hopefully with time, completely killing this dragon. We can not let our attention slide from this; just as we can not dismiss the unfolding disaster which is Fukushima Dai-ichi. People need to be made aware right now about these things, if they are not already. I believe the volcano can be stopped. I’m not so sure about the nuclear Fuk up in Japan.

      Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but any hole the drilled into any volcano will give the magma the vent it needs to erupt. You’d awaken the dragon so to speak with your plan.

      That angle been thought of many times before already. There’s just nothing to be done about volcanoes except for evacuating. Besides, all of that intense pressure in the Earth’s core needs to vented out therefore that is a volcano’s purpose.

      There’s also things like fissure volcanoes like Laki in Iceland and those found in Hawaii where the magma tears the ground apart. They can form anywhere which makes them scarier.

      Many dangers. There’s asteroids/meteors/etc and such that they can’t even track like the one that exploded over Russia last February.

    This article alludes to the most important point but ultimately side steps it altogether. We are encouraging quake events every time we pump chemicals 5000 ft (1 mile) that expand from the heat down there to yield tremendous pressure to force natural gas to the surface. And where are we doing this fracking activity? All around Yellowstone. Probably won’t result in a super volcano in the next 20 years but how about 40 because our appetite for oil only increases with time? Fracking the future for convenience today. Nice.
