SUNDAY SCREENING: ‘NATO’s Secret Armies’

21st Century Wire says…

This is the latest installment of our new weekly SUNDAY SCREENING feature, where our editorial team curates a documentary film for our 21WIRE audience.

“NATO ‘s Secret Armies” was a made-for-TV documentary released in 2009 by Miramonte Films tells a story about NATO’s notorious secret ‘stay behind’ operation designed to be a back-stop resistance against the prospect of occupying Soviet forces in Western Europe. Secret Armies is a much more mainstream study than the BBC’s “Operation GLADIO” (1992), but does offer some stunning revelations detailing how covert operatives were recruited and trained by the CIA and MI-6 and coordinated by NATO’s intelligence department. Eventually this top-secret network became involved in some of the worst activities imaginable on European soil: fixing elections, political assassinations, coups against democratically elected governments, and in what can only be described as acts of terrorism, which cost the lives of hundreds of Europeans.
