WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange may now have official documentation in the form of an ID from Ecuador, according to the country’s media reports, and as reported by RT:
“Assange’s ID was issued on December 21, Ecuadorian outlet El Universo reports, citing “reliable sources” and providing the civil registry number to check on the government website. The document number 1729926483, upon checking on the Internal Revenue Service, is indeed registered to one Julian Paul Assange.”
The speculation was fueled in part by Assange’s first tweet in the New Year, 2018:
— Julian Assange ⌛ (@JulianAssange) January 10, 2018
In the tweet, the whistleblower, who’s been stuck in the Ecuadorian embassy in London since 2012, is seen wearing what appears to be a soccer jersey with Ecuador’s national colors.
In typical mainstream media fashion, a different story is already being told based on their unbridled bias, and some journalists have been critical:
All of these headlines from major papers are literally the exact opposite of what Ecuador said – which is that it’s past time to resolve his situation – but since WikiLeaks & Assange are hated, nobody cares, no journalism standards apply. Just make it up: https://t.co/8dByh4X9cG

If the reports of Assange’s Ecuadorian ID are true, this could potentially result in a passport, and eventually a way out of the embassy. Watch this space. More on this story at RT…
UPDATE: AP new service confirmed Thursday that Ecuador has indeed granted citizenship to Assange, according to an announcement made by the country’s foreign minister. Both AP and Reuters are also reporting that Britain’s Foreign Office has rejected Ecuador’s request to grant Assange diplomatic status.
