One year ago, Web activists were celebrating the end of two Internet piracy bills.
This year, while they’re taking time to remember a victory over the Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect IP (Intellectual Property) Act, they’ve also got their eyes on a larger fight.
Friday, Jan. 18, is now known as “Internet Freedom Day,” organized by the groups that rallied an unexpected force of Internet users to support the concept of the open Web.
As part of Internet Freedom Day, Web advocacy groups are asking for people to take that momentum to a variety of causes, including demanding updates to the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, sending letters to the House and Senate Judiciary committees to ask them to support an open Web and participating in a University of California study about Internet activism.
In the year since the fight over SOPA and PIPA, there have been a few additional victories for open Internet advocates, notably decisions from Republicans and Democrats to put a commitment to an open Internet in their political platforms.
The day’s activities and actions are also tinged with sadness, as many groups are dedicating their efforts to the memory of one of their own, Aaron Swartz, and advocate for changes to federal computer fraud law. He was best known as the co-author of the technology behind RSS and an early force in the creation of Reddit.
Swartz, who was found dead in his apartment last week of an apparent suicide, was facing charges for violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. Those violations carried the possibility of 35 years in prison and a million-dollar fine, though the U.S. Attorney overseeing the case, Carmen Ortiz, said in a statement this week that her office never intended to pursue the maximum penalty.
In response to his death, Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) has circulated a draft bill that she is calling “Aaron’s Law,” which proposes that cases in which users have violated online terms of service fall under the jurisdiction of civil courts. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), a lawmaker who was very prominent in the fight against SOPA and PIPA, has also said that he will lead an investigation into how the Justice Department handled Swartz’s case. Issa is the chairman of the House Oversight committee.
Now that said, there may have been other filters as well. These could include the emergence of terrestrial organisms, hominids, and various civilizational stages, like the transition from stone age culture to agricultural to industrial. But unlike the first primordial stages already discussed, these are porous filters and not terribly unlikely.

Down the years and across the universe, the heroes of science-fiction classics from Dan Dare to Star Wars and The Matrix have fought intergalactic battles with weapons that wipe out enemy electronics at the touch of a button.
Now scientists have turned fantasy into reality by developing a missile that targets buildings with microwaves that disable computers but don’t harm people.
Aircraft manufacturer Boeing successfully tested the weapon on a one-hour flight during which it knocked out the computers of an entire military compound in the Utah desert.
It is thought the missile could penetrate the bunkers and caves believed to be hiding Iran’s suspected nuclear facilities. But experts have warned that, in the wrong hands, the technology could be used to bring Western cities such as London to their knees.
During Boeing’s experiment, the missile flew low over the Utah Test and Training Range, discharging electromagnetic pulses on to seven targets, permanently shutting down their electronics.
Boeing said that the test was so successful even the camera recording it was disabled.
Codenamed the Counter-Electronics High Power Microwave Advanced Missile Project (CHAMP), it is the first time a missile with electromagnetic pulse capability has been tested.
For security reasons, Boeing declined to release film of the test, but instead issued an artist’s impression of it on video. In the clip, a stealth aircraft deploys a missile that emits radio waves from its undercarriage which knock out the computer systems inside the buildings below.

NUCLEAR TENSION
We have the specter of nuclear war imminent, but the fear and tension felt during the Cold War is not apparent in the same way now. Along with Fukushima, the revelation that entire nuclear reactors and countless tons of toxic radioactive waste have been dumped into the sea by both former superpowers, along with factors like political and financial chaos worldwide, means that nuclear war may not hold the same the fear factor it once held. It’s almost like people are so overloaded they don’t care any more what happens. That’s likely exactly where the elite want the masses, but I am not sure they have calculated in the factors of ‘cohesiveness under duress,’ where hard times bring people together in cooperation. Sympathy and compassion rise as all suffer. Hard times are generally very healing for broken societies in the long run as the false and disposable factors of life are exposed by the deeper needs for survival and co-existence. So are they hard times or beautiful times coming? It’s a matter of perspective…
CHANGE IS AFOOT
I have always sensed that true change would be experienced as ecstatic by some and tragic by others – obviously so, if the balance of power is leveled – but there is more to this than mere vested interests and enforced poverty. The new paradigm suggests we are all in it together in a much more complete way than has been recognized thus far. It seems to be emerging that the poor needy and suppressed must change their perspective of programmed poverty consciousness to re-empower themselves, and it doesn’t look like they will get much help from the power brokers. We are all in the same position, if we can embrace the new paradigm perspective on life we can free ourselves of the mental shackles used to keep us under control.
This won’t be handed to us. We have to go get this, and it’s an internal process that leads to external changes.
NEW PARADIGM CONSCIOUSNESS
The gist seems to be to step out of being in a point between the opposites of duality. In other words, being able to encompass the range of possible states between opposites. Instead of being hot or cold, you can experience all states between hot and cold simultaneously, embracing the entire potential rather than being at a point in it. What if your arms are cold and you legs are hot? Can you experience both and embrace the difference as an experience? Can you be depressed and ecstatic simultaneously – well yes you can, if you can embrace the appropriate consciousness that allows this, and allow is a big word in this field.
‘ALLOW IT’
It seems you will not experience what you won’t allow yourself to experience, but who is doing the allowing? The subconscious mind filters out anything you have decided you don’t believe in, and a well programmed subconscious can be used to make people strictly adhere to a conditioned reality, ermm, look around you. There is more, much more to be perceived right now than you are seeing, but you won’t allow it…
We can’t perceive it all because it would be overload for the conscious mind, but we can learn to allow more to be perceived and learn to CHOOSE OUR PERSPECTIVE – a very, very scary thing for the elite, as they continue to rely on choosing our perspective for us - mwahahahaha.
MWAHAHAHAHA! Food for thought…?
