As of Monday, Oregon authorities were investigating suspicious packages sent to government buildings around the state. Now, the FBI appear to be in process of taking over the investigation. Authorities have stated that they are suspecting foul play, and hazardous materials teams (HAZMAT) have been deployed to separate sites.
Could this develop into a repeat of the anthrax attacks of 2001?
Sadly, the federal government appear to have completely fumbled the last investigation, and remained silent when the trial’s defendant (the fall guy) mysteriously committed suicide right before proceeding were due to start. According to the FBI:
“Soon after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, letters laced with anthrax began appearing in the U.S. mail. Five Americans were killed and 17 were sickened in what became the worst biological attacks in U.S. history. The ensuing investigation by the FBI and its partners—code-named “Amerithrax”—has been one of the largest and most complex in the history of law enforcement. In August 2008, Department of Justice and FBI officials announced a breakthrough in the case and released documents and information showing that charges were about to be brought against Dr. Bruce Ivins, who took his own life before those charges could be filed.”
To prove what a high priority this ground-shaking case was for the FBI, it only took them NINE years to investigate (cover-up) the ‘Amerithrax’ attacks. On February 19, 2010, the Justice Department, the FBI, and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service – formally concluded their investigation into the 2001 anthrax attacks.
For Americans at least, expectations are already pretty low regarding any justice in a case like this…
The FBI is assisting the Oregon State Police in a statewide investigation into suspicious mail received at multiple government offices. Three people have been hospitalized and some of the packages contained an “unknown substance,” according to police.
The conditions of those hospitalized are unclear.
Authorities announcing the investigation on Monday said packages had been received at government offices, sheriff’s offices and courthouses, local media reported.

An Oregon State Police (OSP) dispatcher said there was a white powder incident at the jail and sheriff’s office in Grant County, Oregon. An envelope addressed to and opened by Sheriff Glenn Palmer caused him to break out in a skin rash and he was rushed to an emergency room for observation. Two other people were also taken to hospitals. Hazardous materials teams and investigators responded to the incident.

The Blue Mountain Eagle reported that the sheriff’s office shares a centralized air conditioning system with the jail, so inmates and additional staff might have been affected.
OSP spokesman Lt. Bill Fugate confirmed that three counties all received the suspicious packages and he had heard that packages had arrived at up to 20 locations, although this has not been confirmed.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department in southwest Oregon was among the agencies to receive a parcel, reported the Associated Press.
The Mail Tribune in Medford reported that the department’s rural office in White City had discovered a package and that the department’s main building had been evacuated for about three hours.
